Studies consistenly show that two or more drinks a day
can increase the risk of breast cancer. Those with a family history of breast cancer may
be better off abstaining from alcoholic beverages, or limiting consumption to no more than
two drinks per week. As little as two drinks a day may raise the risk for colon cancer,
which is very common. This increased risk of colon cancer may be offset by daily consumption
of at least 400 micrograms of folic acid, or folate, a common B-vitamin found in fresh
vegetables, cereals and orange juice.
If you choose to drink, red wine may be your best alcoholic beverage. Red wine contains an antioxident called
resveratrol. Resveratrol has been shown to block DNA damage known to lead to cancer. It also tends to detoxify
known carcinogens and to help prevent tumor growth.
